At Craigslea State High School, Guidance Officers, Ms Laura Halliday, Ms Lisa Cameron and Mrs Claire Harvey, work with students and their parents/caregivers, in conjunction with teachers, specialist support personnel and other community agencies. They both works as part of the Student Support Services Team, including the Youth Health Nurse and Chaplain.
Guidance Officers are experienced teachers who have completed Masters level qualifications in guidance, counselling and educational assessment. As experienced teachers they also have insight into effective teaching practices, individual learning styles and the challenges presented by classroom and school environments. They also have specialised training in other areas such as student engagement, behaviour management, adolescent counselling and development, mental health and career development.
Guidance Officers identify factors than can be barriers to learning and development and plan interventions or programs that can help students achieve positive outcomes. The Guidance Officer also works with the Head of Senior Schooling to ensure positive academic outcomes and career pathways for students. Duties of Guidance Officers commonly include:
- Assessing student’s placement and specialist support needs
- Providing personal counselling
- Helping students manage relationships and behavioural difficulties
- Providing assistance with study skills
- Subject and course selection
- Career planning and decision-making
- Tertiary Information and application procedures.
