Junior Languages

Learning a language other than English enables a person to communicate across cultures, promote socio-cultural understanding and improve academic competence. Languages help learners to construct meaning in a culturally and linguistically diverse society.

Through the study of language, students develop a sense of cultural identity, self-concept and learn to negotiate and express meaning in a variety of cultural contexts.

Studies in Junior Languages focus on assisting students to use language to gain:

  • proficiency in a language other than English
  • an understanding of different cultures and societies
  • analytical and communication skills that enhance their learning in other areas of the curriculum
  • improved literacy skills through a better understanding of grammar and sentence construction

Students enjoy purposeful and active use of language in tasks that contribute to their understanding of many diverse issues and concepts and involve negotiation and socialisation with peers.

Most students in Year 7 and 8 study a language. Due to the progressive development of language skills, students are encouraged to continue to study in the same language from Year 7 to 8.

Highlights in Year 7 and 8 German

  • a German Café ‘Deutsches Harmonie Café’ as part of the ‘Harmony Day’ celebrations at Craigslea SHS
  • the 'Audi Festival of German Films' sponsored by the Goethe Institute in Brisbane
  • the 'Oktoberfest for Teens' at the RNA Showgrounds
  • a visit to a German restaurant
  • exchange to Germany via SAGSE at the end of Year 10

Senior Languages

Japanese is a vital language for Australians to learn. Apart from our geographic and economic links, Japanese culture is of increasing importance in Australian society and in youth culture particularly. Learners develop positive attitudes to people of other languages, cultures and races and embrace the idea of a multi-ethinic, mulit-lingual and multi-racial society and world. Studies in Languages at Craigslea State High are based on the thorough foundation students receive through the Junior Curricula. Learning is focused on the 4 macroskill areas:

  • Listening

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Speaking

The course aims to develop a student’s communication proficiency in their chosen language study. In Japanese, there will be a continuation of the study of scripts, Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji, with emphasis on Kanji at this level.

Many potential careers in science, business, public service, foreign affairs, travel, trade, teaching, art, translating, law and politics can benefit from a knowledge of a second language. Knowing a language will broaden your horizons and enhance your ability to communicate your wants, needs and ideas. In multicultural Australia, knowledge of a second language for contact with migrant or tourist groups is becoming increasingly useful.

Topics of Study - Senior Japanese

Topics covered include a more detailed study of:

  • Family and community

  • Leisure, recreation and human creativity

  • School and post-school options

  • Social issues

Assessment

A comprehensive knowledge of the content of lower level studies is necessary for higher level studies. Regular reviews are essential to the successful completion of the courses.

Each of the 4 Macroskill areas: listening, speaking, writing, reading, contribute equally to establishing a student’s achievement level. Tests will, as closely as possible, mirror tasks that a student might face in real life. Assessment is completed at school.
